What IS Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?
Pelvic Health Physiotherapy is an area of Physiotherapy which addresses dysfunction in the pelvis. We assess this area through questioning, physical assessment and provide individualised treatment plans. As Physio’s we aim to promote independence and self care. We will work with you to develop a treatment plan with strategies that are effective long term, not just a quick fix.
We help people of all genders with range of conditions such as prolapse, bladder leakage, bowel problems, pelvic pain, pregnancy and post-natal changes, pain with sex and more! If you want to know more about what we do or ask if we can help you contact us.
What to expect from your appointment
Everyone is different, so there is not a “one size fits all” approach to your assessment or treatment.
We take the time to listen to your story and work with you to develop a treatment plan based on your goals and lifestyle
Treatment is based on a thorough assessment which first involves lots of questions about your symptoms, what might be contributing and what goals you want to achieve
Once we have determined the reason for your symptoms we discuss what treatment options will give the best results. There are always a range of option so your preference will guide what treatment options fit in best with your lifestyle, time and goals
Pelvic Floor Assessment
There are many options to assess your pelvic floor, if this is recommended for your. Assessment can be done externally, with an internal examination or with Real-Time Ultrasound to assess:
Pelvic floor muscle strength and function
Prolapse
Vaginal tissue health
Painful or tight muscles
Bladder function
External or Ultrasound assessment is a great option during pregnancy, early postnatal or at any stage for anyone nervous about an internal examination. You many choose this option if an internal examination this would be stressful or traumatising for you.
It is always your choice of what examination is best for you - we will discuss this in the appointment. You are also welcome to bring a support person with you for your appointments.
Treatment
Your treatment will likely include self management strategies such as:
Pelvic floor exercises: for strengthening or relaxing your pelvic floor
Stretches or massage for tight muscles
Bladder training
Bowel management
We also collaborate with other health care professionals, with your consent. This can include referrals to a GP, Gynaecologist, Urologist, Midwife, Psychologist, Sex Therapist, Dietitian, Massage Therapist, Personal Trainer, Osteopath and others to make sure you get the best outcomes.
Confidential
If you are experiencing symptoms that are embarrassing or difficult to talk about, know that you have already been brave to start looking at options to help yourself.
As Pelvic Physio’s we are used to talking about bladder leaking, bowel habits, sex, pelvic pain and traumatic experiences - but we understand that it may be challenging for you. We do our best to provide a supportive and confidential environment so you can share your concerns openly.
